Farwell to Summer

August 31st, 2009

When the summer started, I made a list of all of the things I wanted to do. We did manage to check quite a few of the items off of the list, and we even squeezed in a few extra Here are a few highlights…

We made it on the train. We even rode the “big train” (Cal Train) over to Mountain View to meet Daddy for dinner. Carina really liked this one because it goes faster than the Light Rail. I think Carina’s favorite train ride though was when she got to go with her friend Hannah…

We only made it to the actual beach once. We had a nice picnic dinner with Crystal and Liam. Our last trip to the beach resulted in very little sand mess because Carina didn’t really want to touch it. This time….she was all about the sand! She loved it.

The San Jose Children’s Museum was a big hit too. Carina loved the water area and the sand table (no surprise there after the trip to the beach). She also enjoyed dressing up…too bad she’s not actually trained – I think California good use a few extra fireman right now!

This past weekend we finished up our front yard by planting some pretty flowers (thanks Crystal!). Carina’s favorite thing to do is walk on the new wall…

Well, summer isn’t officially over yet I guess. I still have time to fit in a few more fun things even though I’m back at work!

Europe!

August 5th, 2009

Last summer I was able to accompany Dave on a work trip to London. This summer, I was able to accompany him on another work trip – this time to Frankfurt, Paris, and London! Carina was left behind to watch over the cats….well, Grandmas & Grandpas (and an Auntie) were helping her out. She was being nothing but the delightful little angel she is….

Frankfurt – July 19 & 20
I met Dave in Frankfurt after he had already been there for a few days. Germany was a lot different than I had pictured – it was green and lush and quite charming! I enjoyed a walk through the town my first day…

The next day, while Dave was at work, I went to the Botanical Gardens…

and the Frankfurt Zoo. Our last night, we ate at a great restaurant, Gerbermuhle. I had a German classic, wiener schnitzel. Yum!

Paris – July 21 & 22
The following day we drove a rental car to Paris. The almost six hour drive was a great opportunity to see the German and French countryside. We even drove through the Champagne region and saw the famous vineyards. Once in Paris we went to see the Eiffel Tower…

and Arc de Triomphe. The next day we went to the Catacombs. A very interesting….and slightly creepy….place. That afternoon we went to the Pantheon and the Louvre. My favorite was the Venus de Milo…

I like to call July 22nd my day of “more desserts than meals”….I had a breakfast dessert, a lunch dessert, a dessert for a snack, and a dinner dessert – yum!

London – July 23….and 24, 25 & 26
I was really only supposed to have one day in London before my flight home. I visited in the Museum of Musical Instruments at the Royal Academy of Music and then, after Dave was done working, we went to see the musical Wicked…

The following day – I missed my flight! Ugh…the soonest they could get me on a new one was in three days. So, I tried to make the most of my new, extended, vacation. I went to the Tower Bridge, Covent Garden, and Abbey Road…

On the morning of the day before I left, I got some horrible news…..my sweet Uncle Tim had passed away. I was shocked and felt helpless being so far away. After a rough morning, I decided we needed to get out or I was going to go crazy. We went to the Natural History Museum. Needless to say, I was happy to finally be on a plane home the following day. I was met at the airport by my in-laws and my sweet Carina. Dave returned the following day.

I headed down to my mom’s house to help her with arrangements for my uncle. There were two nice services on Friday. I will miss his sweet smile!
